Athletics adding another young arm to rotation

The Athletics have turned to a youth movement in an attempt to rebuild their rotation.

Prospect Gage Jump has impressed in his first two outings, allowing five runs on 12 hits and two walks over 12 innings, striking out 10 batters.

Fellow pitching prospect Kade Morris was called up to the majors on Tuesday and is expected to fill an opening in the A's rotation.

Another young pitcher is set to join that duo. Martin Gallegos from MLB.com reported that pitcher Jack Perkins is set to rejoin the rotation and will make his first start of the season on Friday.

Jack Perkins getting chance to prove himself in Athletics rotation

A starter throughout his time in the minors, Perkins has typically filled a variety of roles in the A's bullpen in the majors. That has been the case this season as well as he has posted a 5.46 ERA and a 1.214 WHIP over his 28 innings, recording three saves while striking out 33 batters with seven walks. He has pitched better than his ERA would suggest with a 2.59 FIP and a 34.6% hard-hit rate (league average is 40.6%).

This return to the rotation is a second chance for Perkins. He made four starts for the A's in 2025 before his season ended on the injured list, posting a 3-1 record, albeit with a 5.68 ERA and a 1.421 WHIP over 19 innings as a starter.

The A's are still trying to figure out how best to use Perkins. A return to the rotation could go a long way to determining his future.
