Athletics Make Decision After Aaron Civale News

The Athletics have moved on from Aaron Civale, designating the veteran right-hander for assignment as the club continues reshaping its pitching staff ahead of the second half. The move comes shortly after the organization parted ways with longtime pitching coach Scott Emerson.

Left-hander Jacob Lopez will take Civale's place in the starting rotation, giving the Athletics another opportunity to evaluate one of their younger arms as they look toward the future.

Civale joined the Athletics to provide stability and experience, but he struggled to produce consistent results during his stint with the club. Rather than waiting until the trade deadline, the front office opted to clear a roster spot and move in a different direction.

Lopez now steps into the rotation after splitting time between Triple-A Las Vegas and the major league roster this season. The 28-year-old has primarily worked as a multi-inning option but will now receive an extended opportunity as a starter.

The Athletics' projected rotation entering the second half consists of Gage Jump, J.T. Ginn, Jacob Lopez, Jeffrey Springs and Jack Perkins. The group reflects the organization's growing commitment to developing its young pitching talent.

The decision also comes as the Athletics attempt to halt a difficult season. The club entered the All-Star break on a lengthy losing streak and has leaned further into evaluating younger players while building toward the future.

Whether Lopez can seize the opportunity remains to be seen, but the Athletics have made their direction clear. Moving on from Civale signals a continued focus on giving younger pitchers meaningful major league innings during the second half.
