A Familiar Face Returns

Craig Kimbrel’s journey with the Braves began in 2010. He quickly established himself as a dominant force in the bullpen. Kimbrel led the National League in saves for four consecutive seasons. He earned the 2011 Rookie of the Year honors. He also gained a reputation as one of the game’s most reliable closers. His career boasts 440 saves and a 2.59 ERA over 837 appearances.

Kimbrel’s Challenges in Baltimore

In 2024, Kimbrel joined the Orioles, initially showing promise with a 2.80 ERA and 23 saves before the All-Star break. However, the second half of the season saw a sharp decline, with Kimbrel posting a 10.59 ERA and six blown saves, leading to his release in September.

A Strategic Move for the Braves

Recognizing the need for bullpen depth, the Braves signed Kimbrel to a minor league contract in March 2025. The deal, potentially worth $2 million if he reaches the majors, included an assignment to Triple-A Gwinnett to regain form . His performance in Gwinnett, including a perfect eighth inning in his 2025 debut, demonstrated his readiness for a major league return.

Impact on the Braves’ Bullpen

With Raisel Iglesias currently serving as the Braves’ closer, Kimbrel’s addition provides valuable depth and experience to the bullpen. Manager Brian Snitker expressed hope that Kimbrel can replicate his early-season success from 2024, offering a potential boost to the team’s late-inning strategy.

Looking Ahead

As the Braves continue their season, Kimbrel’s return adds a layer of veteran leadership and reliability to the bullpen. His experience and previous success with the Braves position him as a key asset in the team’s pursuit of postseason success.
