Atlanta Braves Claim Pitcher off Waivers

The Atlanta Braves are off today as they start a three-game series tomorrow at home against the New York Mets. The Braves enter this weekend’s series 12-7 in August, averaging 5.4 runs per game while allowing 4.7 runs per game. Today, they acquired right-handed pitcher Cal Quantrill off waivers from the Miami Marlins. The Marlins designated Quantrill for assignment on Tuesday.

Cal Quantrill

Quantrill, this season in 24 starts, went 4-10. He posted a 5.50 ERA, a 4.59 FIP, a 1.39 WHIP, and 82 strikeouts in 109.2 innings. In his seven-year career, he has pitched for four teams: the Cleveland Guardians, San Diego Padres, Colorado Rockies, and the Marlins. He started his big league career with the Padres, where he spent 1.5 seasons, making 33 appearances with 19 of those coming as starts. Quantrill went 8-8 with a 4.79 ERA, a 4.24 FIP, a 1.31 WHIP, and 107 strikeouts in 120.1 innings.

Quantrill was traded to the Cleveland Guardians on August 31, 2020. He spent 3.5 seasons in Cleveland, making 99 appearances with 75 of those coming as starts. Quantrill went 27-15 with a 3.58 ERA, a 4.24 FIP, a 1.25 WHIP, and 320 strikeouts in 450.1 innings. He spent the 2024 season with the Rockies, making 29 starts, going 8-11 with a 4.98 ERA, a 5.32 FIP, a 1.52 WHIP, and 110 strikeouts in 148.1 innings.
