Baseball’s Two Best Teams Finally Clash In Atlanta

Baseball fans are about to get one of the best regular-season series of the year.

The Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs — arguably the two best teams in Major League Baseball right now — will clash Tuesday through Thursday in a massive three-game series at Truist Park. Both teams enter the matchup looking like legitimate World Series contenders, and with the season already heating up in May, this series feels far bigger than a normal regular-season matchup.

The Braves enter the series continuing to prove why they are one of baseball’s most dangerous teams even while dealing with injuries. Atlanta just took a huge series win over the Los Angeles Dodgers despite still being without Ronald Acuña Jr., who is expected to return within the next week. Even without their superstar outfielder, the Braves continue finding ways to win behind elite pitching, power hitting, and playoff-level experience.

Meanwhile, the Cubs have been one of the biggest surprises in baseball this season.

Chicago enters Atlanta with one of the best records in MLB and a lineup that has consistently overwhelmed opponents throughout the year. The Cubs’ pitching staff has also quietly become one of the league’s best, which makes this series even more exciting considering the pitching matchups lined up for all three games.

Tuesday night’s opener immediately feels like a playoff game.

The Braves will send Holmes to the mound against Cubs ace Shota Imanaga in a matchup featuring two teams currently sitting near the top of the MLB standings. Imanaga has continued building off his breakout success from last season and has become one of the toughest pitchers in baseball to square up consistently. Atlanta’s offense will have a huge challenge trying to generate early momentum against him.

Wednesday’s game brings another fascinating matchup with Grant Holmes expected to face Colin Rea. The Cubs’ lineup has been excellent against right-handed pitching this year, but Atlanta’s offense remains one of the few groups capable of exploding for crooked numbers at any moment. Matt Olson, Austin Riley, Marcell Ozuna, and Ozzie Albies continue carrying the load while Acuña works his way back toward returning.

Then Thursday could feature the best pitching matchup of the entire series.

Chris Sale is scheduled to start for Atlanta against Ben Brown in the finale, and Sale has looked rejuvenated this season. When healthy, he still flashes the dominant swing-and-miss stuff that once made him one of baseball’s most feared pitchers. Against a dangerous Cubs lineup, Sale could have an opportunity to make a major statement heading into the summer months.

This series also feels important because of what it represents for both franchises.

The Braves are trying to prove they are still the team to beat in the National League despite injuries and roster turnover. The Cubs, meanwhile, are attempting to show they are no longer just a fun surprise story but a legitimate championship threat capable of beating elite teams consistently.

And honestly, these are the types of series baseball needs more of.

Historic franchises. Packed stadiums. Elite pitching. Star power everywhere. Two fanbases expecting World Series contention. It is only May, but Braves vs. Cubs already feels like October baseball.

Prediction: Braves win series 2-1. Atlanta’s experience, home-field advantage, and pitching depth should barely give them the edge in what could easily become an NLCS preview.
