As the 2025 Spring Training season gets underway, the New York Yankees have made a historic decision that has shocked fans and players alike. After half a century of enforcing a strict grooming policy that banned beards, Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner reversed the rule, allowing players and uniformed personnel to wear "well-groomed" beards.
Steinbrenner announced the move on February 21, the morning of the Yankees' first spring training game. This move marks a significant departure from the long-standing tradition established by his father, the legendary George "The Boss" Steinbrenner.
The announcement immediately sparked reactions from fans and even members of the Yankees' family.
Ashley Rodon, whose husband Carlos had to shave his beard when he signed with the Yankees before the 2023 season, posted a picture of the sun rising over George M. Steinbrenner Field on X (formerly Twitter), along with the comment: "The day the beard era began."

CC Sabathia, who had challenged the rule with a beard in 2017 Spring Training and later grew a beard after retirement, was quick to repost the Yankees' announcement on his Instagram stories.
Former Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain weighed in earlier this spring, claiming that the team's strict grooming policy had previously prevented some players from joining.
"This may be the biggest rule change to happen in MLB in the 21st century," one fan said in response to the news on X.
The change comes days after new Yankees closer Devin Williams struggled with the rule. After being traded to the team in December, Williams admitted he hadn't been clean-shaven in six years. He reported to camp with a full beard, only to shave it before the first official workouts, though he quickly started growing a goatee.

In a Twitter poll conducted by MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch, the overwhelming majority of respondents supported the Yankees’ decision to lift the beard ban. However, the reactions were not entirely one-sided. Some fans expressed disappointment, particularly those who felt the move compromised the team’s long-held standards of discipline.
While most fans celebrated the new policy, seeing it as a step into the modern era, not everyone was happy. Some felt that the Yankees were abandoning their tradition, with one fan commenting, “The Pinstripes used to stand for something, but Four Nights in October broke them 21 years ago.”

Others criticized the decision, calling the team "Woke" and suggesting that the Yankees had weakened their standards by allowing facial hair. Despite these reactions, the overall reaction was positive.
