Blue Jays Acquire Jose Soriano from the Angels

All of the talk in the lead-up to the trade deadline suggested that the Toronto Blue Jays would not only sell their veterans on expiring contracts but also look to buy controllable assets to add to their core group. On Monday morning, that came to fruition.

ESPN insider Jeff Passan broke the news on X (formerly Twitter) that the Blue Jays are acquiring starting pitcher Jose Soriano from the Los Angeles Angels for a prospect haul that includes Arjun Nimmala, Eddie Micheletti, and Angel Rivero.

Passan wrote:

“BREAKING: The Toronto Blue Jays are acquiring right-hander Jose Soriano in a trade with the Los Angeles Angels, sources tell ESPN.

The Angels will receive top shortstop prospect Arjun Nimmala, outfielder Eddie Micheletti and right-hander Angel Rivero from the Blue Jays for Jose Soriano, sources tell ESPN,”

The 27-year-old Soriano is playing on the one-year, $2.9 million contract he signed with the Angels in January to avoid arbitration. He has two more years of team control beyond 2026 before becoming eligible for free agency in 2029. He’s gone 9-6 across 22 starts so far this season, sporting a 3.29 ERA to go with 127 strikeouts and 57 walks.
