Blue Jays Getting Trade Calls On Jose Soriano

Jose Soriano was just traded to the Blue Jays earlier today, but some clubs with prior interest in the right-hander have been in touch with Toronto about a possible flip, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.  The Cubs were the only team publicly linked to Soriano in trade rumors, but it’s unclear if Chicago still has any interest after already adding Kevin Gausman and Braxton Garrett to the pitching staff in trades.

It is probably unlikely to expect another deal here, as Soriano lines up as a longer-term piece in Toronto’s rotation through his remaining two years of arbitration control.  For the Jays to flip Soriano before the 5pm CT deadline, Toronto would have to get an offer that tops the three-prospect package they sent to the Angels (Arjun Nimmala,  Eddie Micheletti, and Angel Rivero), and the Blue Jays would probably also want to have another deal for a starting pitcher lined up, unless they want to save that for the offseason.

In short, this latest round of Soriano talks is probably nothing more than due diligence by some teams who had Soriano high on their deadline wishlist.  Or, perhaps a rival club felt it was close to completing a deal with the Angels before L.A. pivoted to the Toronto offer, so this hypothetical club is now shopping that same trade package to the Jays.  Nothing can be ruled out until the deadline has passed, of course, but it’s safe to assume that Soriano will still be in the Blue Jays organization this evening.
