Blue Jays' John Schneider Announces George Springer News Before Dodgers Game

The Toronto Blue Jays are entering a crucial stretch of the season, and after a three-game sweep of the Colorado Rockies, have extended their division lead in the AL East to four games.

Toronto has continued to produce without its veteran leader and designated hitter, George Springer, who has not appeared in a game since last Monday, when he suffered a concussion against the Baltimore Orioles.

The 35-year-old right-handed slugger had been experiencing a bounce-back year after a disappointing 2024 campaign and has been a focal point in the Blue Jays’ offense this season. Springer owns a .291 batting average, .889 OPS, 18 home runs, and 57 RBIs over 101 games, seemingly returning to his prime offensive numbers from 2019–2021.

George Springer Nearing Return to Action

On Wednesday, Springer was set to play his first rehab game with the Triple-A affiliate Buffalo Bisons but did not participate.

Ahead of a pivotal weekend series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, manager John Schneider announced that Springer is hitting, running, and taking fly balls with the Bisons and continues to feel better.

He also noted that Springer is awaiting clearance from MLB before appearing in a game.

Springer’s Return Will Make Hot Blue Jays Lineup Even Scarier

This comes at a great time for the Blue Jays, as Springer has finally resumed baseball activities. The offense had a historic performance at Coors Field against the Rockies, where the Blue Jays set franchise records for runs scored (45) and hits (63) in a three-game series. The 63 hits also marked a modern-era MLB record for a three-game set, so the lineup will become even more formidable when Springer returns as they push for the postseason.

Springer arrived in Toronto in 2021 after seven successful seasons with the Houston Astros, highlighted by a World Series championship—experience the Blue Jays hoped would benefit young stars Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette.

In his career, Springer has collected four All-Star appearances and two Silver Slugger awards, and over five seasons with the Blue Jays, he has a .257 batting average, .783 OPS, 105 home runs, and 311 RBIs.
