Blue Jays Lose Outfielder to Injured List

The Toronto Blue Jays made a flurry of roster moves on Saturday before their game against the Texas Rangers.

Most notably, the Blue Jays placed Jesus Sanchez on the 10-day injured list with a right ankle sprain. They also optioned outfielder Davis Schneider to Triple-A Buffalo, selected infielder Sean Keys to the major league roster and recalled outfielder Yohendrick Piñango.

Sanchez, 28, was having a solid season with Toronto. In 73 games, the left-handed bat slashed .274/.316/.437 with a .753 OPS, seven home runs and 29 RBI. The Blue Jays acquired Sanchez from the Houston Astros in the offseason in exchange for Joey Loperfido.

The Blue Jays are now down three right fielders in Sanchez, Addison Barger (right elbow inflammation) and Anthony Santander (left labral surgery).

Barger is still experiencing some soreness while hitting and the Blue Jays have yet to determine when he can begin a rehab assignment. Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins is optimistic that Santander will start doing baseball activities soon.

In the meantime, with Sanchez out, this paves the way for George Springer to play right field which would allow Keys to DH. Keys, 23, is the Blue Jays' No. 14 ranked prospect and was having a big year between Double-A and Triple-A offensively. In 67 minor league games, Keys slashed .284/.409/.619 with a 1.028 OPS, 21 homers and 54 RBI.

The Blue Jays' offense currently ranks in the bottom third of the league and could use more power given Vladimir Guerrero Jr. only has four homers this season.

The loss of Sanchez, especially with Barger out, is significant. However, the hope is that the addition of Keys will provide a jolt to Toronto's offense.

Despite being ravaged by pitching injuries in 2026, the Blue Jays are 39-43 and one game out of the third and final Wild Card spot in a weak American League.
