The Toronto Blue Jays strode into the Bronx and took the first game against the first-place New York Yankees by a score of 4-2. Toronto plated three runs in the ninth against struggling Devin Williams, who was demoted from the closer role after the game.
A rainout forced the two teams to play a doubleheader, but the Yankees took both games, outscoring the Blue Jays 16-3 in the two games combined.
The Blue Jays went a combined 2-for-17 with runners in scoring position and tallied just four extra base-hits, one being a home run by Anthony Santander in the nightcap.
On Tuesday, the Blue Jays announced they would get some help on the offensive side.
The Blue Jays reinstated Daulton Varsho from the injured list, and sent infielder Will Wagner down to Triple-A.
Varsho hasn't had spectacular offensive numbers, but his Spring Training performance provided many with optimism about his potential in 2025. Varsho slugged four home runs in 12 games despite recovering from offseason shoulder surgery.
Varsho hit .120 in seven minor league games while rehabbing his injury, but the team called him up as he has appeared very healthy both at the plate and in the field.
Much speculation was given as to which Blue Jays hitter would need to be sacrificed upon Varsho's return, with lefties Nathan Lukes and Addison Barger both players rumored to be sent down when Varsho returned.
Barger has hit .217 with a .598 OPS, while Lukes has been slightly better at .222/.326/.333.
Varsho's return will help a Blue Jays lineup that has been mired in a lengthy slump, hopefully providing a spark that gets this team going.
