The Toronto Blue Jays are beginning to trend in the right direction after a frustrating start to the 2026 MLB season. Winning seven of their last ten games, the Blue Jays enter Sunday’s series finale against the Baltimore Orioles with a 29-30 record and in third place in the American League East.

While the Blue Jays have started to build some positive momentum, injuries have remained a major challenge throughout the season. Toronto has spent much of the year without several key members of its pitching staff, forcing the organization to rely heavily on its depth as it attempts to climb back into contention.

One of the most significant absences has been veteran right-hander Shane Bieber. The former Cy Young Award winner has yet to appear in a Major League game this season as he continues working his way back from elbow inflammation and arm fatigue caused by his return from Tommy John surgery in 2025.

However, the Blue Jays received another positive update regarding the 31-year-old’s recovery on Sunday. The Dunedin Blue Jays of Single-A revealed that Bieber is scheduled to make another rehab start as part of his return process.

Bieber recently began his rehab assignment on May 25 in the Florida Complex League, where he threw two scoreless innings in his first game action of the year. Sunday's start will likely allow the Blue Jays to continue increasing his workload as he builds toward a return to Toronto's rotation.

When healthy, Bieber will bring a valuable veteran starter presence to the Blue Jays' rotation. Earning two All-Star appearances throughout his career with the Cleveland Guardians before being dealt to Toronto at the 2025 trade deadline, Bieber finished last season with a 3.57 ERA and 37 strikeouts across seven starts and 40.1 innings pitched.

For now, the Blue Jays’ focus remains on managing his workload. Sunday’s rehab start will provide the organization with an opportunity to evaluate his progress as they continue preparing for his eventual return to the active roster.
