Blue Jays may play home games at spring training stadium in Florida

As the 2021 MLB season approaches, the Toronto Blue Jays are attempting to figure out where their home games will be played if travel to Canada remains restricted. And it looks like the front-runner may be TD Ballpark, their spring training stadium in Dunedin, Fla.

Currently, teams based in Canada have been forced to relocate due to the ongoing pandemic, as the Canadian government does not want players constantly traveling back and forth from the U.S. Current Canadian travel restrictions would require players to quarantine for 14 days upon their arrival, which is simply not feasible for the MLB schedule. These restrictions could be lifted by the start of the season, but the Blue Jays cannot risk not having a plan by then.

Last season, the Blue Jays played home games at their triple-A affiliate's ballpark in Buffalo, N.Y., but this season they may be heading to Florida instead. According to The Tampa Bay Times, the Blue Jays have already had preliminary talks with officials in Dunedin, who have expressed enthusiasm about the possibility of games being played there.

"We would welcome the opportunity if they were to open their season here," parks and recreation director Vince Gizzi said. "It would just be wonderful for our city, if they were restricted from going in and out of Canada, that they could play here. ... We'd be excited to see that happen, especially in our newly renovated stadium."

The MLB season is currently scheduled to begin on April 1, with the Blue Jays heading to New York City to play the Yankees.
