The Toronto Blue Jays signed future Hall of Famer Max Scherzer to a one-year, $15.5 million contract this past offseason, but they've yet to get a return on investment. The 40-year-old went down with a thumb injury after just one start this year, a three-inning outing against the Baltimore Orioles on March 29.

Scherzer spent the last season-and-a-half with the Texas Rangers before going to Toronto. The right-hander didn't perform to his usual standard last year, as he went 2-4 with a 3.95 ERA in just nine starts. His career ERA is 3.16.

However, Scherzer is just a year-and-a-half removed from going 4-2 with a 3.20 ERA in eight starts for the Rangers after they acquired him from the New York Mets at the 2023 trade deadline. Toronto could use that version of the three-time Cy Young Award winner, as they're eight games behind the New York Yankees for first place in the AL East.

Luckily for the Blue Jays, Scherzer is inching closer to his return, via MLB.com's Keegan Matheson.

"Max Scherzer will throw live BP to a few Blue Jays hitters tomorrow at Rogers Centre," he reported on Thursday. "This puts him back close to the stage he was at before his rehab stalled the last time."

"A couple of these sessions should lead to a rehab assignment, but... Baby steps," he continued."

Right-hander Chris Bassitt (4-3, 3.38 ERA) has been Toronto's best starting pitcher in Scherzer's absence. The 36-year-old also has a team-high 63 strikeouts in 61.1 innings pitched, while ace Kevin Gausman (5-4, 3.68 ERA) is second with 61 in 66 frames.
