Blue Jays Receive Troubling Bo Bichette News Before ALCS Against Mariners

The Toronto Blue Jays eliminated the New York Yankees in the American League Division Series, doing so without two-time All-Star shortstop Bo Bichette. Working his way back from a left knee sprain that has sidelined him since Sept. 6, Bichette has been targeting a return in the ALCS which begins on Sunday against the Seattle Mariners.

One major hurdle Bichette needed to clear before Sunday's series opener was running the bases. He did that on Saturday at Rogers Centre, with Blue Jays manager John Schneider detailing what that could mean for his upcoming availability.

“We’re just seeing how he gets through running the bases, turning corners, things like that,” Schneider said (via Keegan Matheson of MLB.com). “To see how the rest of his days goes is -- I don't want to say our last decision -- but one of them. We’re just getting some feedback from him when he's done.”

As Schneider noted, the Blue Jays were still awaiting feedback on how Bichette's base running went. The news later surfaced via Shi Davidi of Sportsnet that it did not go well for the 27-year-old shortstop.

"In video taken by Sportsnet, the star Toronto Blue Jays shortstop is seen leading off from first base, taking off for second and grimacing after rounding the bag before pulling up," Davidi wrote.

That video from Sportsnet has surfaced on X, and it does not look encouraging for Blue Jays fans.

Davidi added, "He then walks over to third base where Blue Jays bench coach Don Mattingly, first base coach Mark Budzinski, medical director Andrew Pipkin and strength and conditioning coach Scott Weberg were overseeing his running and dropped to the turf. The group conferred for a couple minutes before Bichette, visibly frustrated, walked off the field gingerly."

This is very troubling news for a Blue Jays team that has been hopeful to have Bichette impact their pursuit of a World Series title. Because the ALCS is a longer seven-game series than the five-game ALDS, Toronto could still opt to place Bichette on the roster in hopes of him being available later in the series. But Saturday's news is not good for his potential Game 1 availability.

What Blue Jays Are Missing With Bo Bichette's Injury

In his seventh MLB season, all with the Blue Jays, Bichette is consistently one of the game's best offensive shortstops. Following a down year in 2024 that saw his post career-lows in several offensive categories, Bichette bounced back this season with a .311 batting average that ranked second in the American League.

While his power numbers were down a bit this season, with just 18 home runs in 582 at-bats, Bichette posted an .840 OPS that ranked third among all qualified shortstops. Only Bobby Witt Jr. or the Kansas City Royals and Geraldo Perdomo of the Arizona Diamondbacks were better.

This is the production Toronto is missing with Bichette sidelined, and what the team hopes to get back at some point this October. But the latest news from Saturday's workout is troubling, and the Blue Jays are now just hours away from needing to make an official decision on Bichette's ALCS roster status.
