When the Toronto Blue Jays signed future Hall of Famer Max Scherzer to a one-year, $15.5 million deal despite his lengthy recent injury history, the hope was that the 3x Cy Young had some more gas left in the tank.
However, during his March 29th start, Scherzer suffered inflammation in his right thumb and tightness in his lat which has bugged him for quite some time.
With the Blue Jays surprisingly contending at 31-28, good for second in the AL East, a return for Scherzer would be huge.
Fortunately for the surprising contenders, their marquee signing could be on the way soon.
Scherzer faced hitters in live batting practice on Tuesday, which puts him on track to pitch in either a FCL or sim game in Florida on Sunday, according to Keegan Matheson, the Blue Jays beat reporter for MLB.com.
Scherzer has faced a difficult path up to this point, with his thumb and back not feeling quite right to the point where a rehab assignment was appropriate.
The Blue Jays have vaulted to a 31-28 start, which is six games better than their 28-31 start at this time last year. Still, the team faces rumors that they will sell pieces like Bo Bichette at the deadline.
The return of players like Scherzer would help the Blue Jays solidify their place as a legitimate contender this summer.
Scherzer threw a 45-pitch bullpen on May 26 and faced hitters on the field at Rogers Centre on Friday. The fact that Scherzer and the team feel that he's good to move to the next step in his recovery after this latest outing is a positive sign.
