It has been a long and winding road for Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Jose Berrios and his elbow injury this season.

Berrios made it as far as Triple-A on a rehab assignment, but was shutdown in the process as he attempted to make it back to the big-league club.

Now, there's a resolution. Blue Jays manager John Schneider told reporters on Wednesday that Berrios underwent full Tommy John surgery and will miss the rest of the season as well as a portion of next season as well.

Berrios was initially shutdown back in spring training in March with his elbow injury. The Blue Jays were first calling it a stress fracture in the elbow. However, after his latest setback he was examined by Dr. Keith Meister and it was determined that Berrios would need surgery.

It wasn't until Berrios went in for his procedure today that it was decided he would require Tommy John surgery. The Blue Jays were hoping that he could return in a couple months, but now this won't be the case.

The Blue Jays have been hit with a ton of starting pitching injuries this season. In addition to Berrios, Max Scherzer (forearm, ankle, thumb), Cody Ponce (ACL sprain) and Shane Bieber (right elbow inflammation) are all currently on the injured list. They recently designated Eric Lauer for assignment, who was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Toronto doesn't have a fifth starter at the moment, but they will soon need one being in a 17 game stretch in 17 days.

The Blue Jays' starting rotation features: Kevin Gausman, Dylan Cease, Trey Yesavage and Patrick Corbin.

The reigning American League champions have not gotten off to a good start this season, holding a 21-27 record. They're currently in third place in the AL East and 12 games back of the first place Tampa Bay Rays.

They will now have to try and turn their season around without one of their best starters in Berrios the rest of the way.
