Blue Jays' Trey Yesavage Continues Dominant Run

Since returning from a right shoulder impingement, Trey Yesavage has been nothing short of stellar for the Toronto Blue Jays.

Wednesday was no different, as Toronto's No. 1 prospect outdueled New York Yankees budding ace Cam Schlittler by tossing six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts in a 2-1 victory over New York. Yesavage allowed just two hits and did not issue a walk.

Through five starts this season, the 22-year-old right-hander owns a stellar 1.07 ERA across 25.1 innings. He has recorded 29 strikeouts compared to eight walks.

Yesavage earned a late-season call-up ahead of Toronto's postseason run in 2025. Despite his meteoric rise through the Blue Jays' farm system in his first professional season, questions remained regarding how he would fare in high-pressure moments at the major league level. He was solid in three regular-season starts, posting a 3.21 ERA over 14 innings.

However, in his postseason debut, Yesavage lived up to his top prospect status. In Game 2 of the 2025 ALDS against the Yankees, he pitched 5.1 hitless innings while racking up 11 strikeouts and allowing just one walk. He followed that performance with another dominant outing in Game 5 of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He allowed one run on three hits across seven innings while striking out 12 without issuing a walk.

Those outings only elevated expectations heading into 2026, but a right shoulder impingement forced Yesavage to begin the season on the injured list. Although he missed the first month this season, Yesavage has returned and picked up right where he left off.

Yesavage's dominance is especially important given the injuries throughout Toronto's rotation. José Berríos is out for the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, and Shane Bieber has yet to pitch in 2026 because of inflammation in his surgically repaired right elbow.

According to manager John Schneider, Bieber could begin a rehab assignment by the end of next week "if all goes well." Meanwhile, Max Scherzer threw a bullpen session on Monday and is expected to throw another today as he continues working his way back from right forearm and left ankle injuries.

Injuries have plagued the reigning American League champions and contributed to their disappointing 22-27 start. Yesavage will need to continue pitching like the ace he has been thus far for Toronto to help keep their rotation afloat until other starters return.

The Blue Jays conclude their series in New York tonight before returning home for a three-game set against the Pittsburgh Pirates beginning tomorrow.
