Bo Bichette’s ‘noncommittal’ answer to waiving no-trade clause

The New York Mets’ struggles to win games in the 2026 MLB season have put the franchise in the middle of rumors again, as the trade deadline looms. On that end, Bo Bichette has become among the chief targets of speculation as a potential trade asset for New York, but moving him will be easier said than done.

For one, he carries a big contract after signing a three-year, $126 million deal with the Mets in January. Perhaps the most important in the equation is Bichette’s full no-trade clause. So, if the Mets would send him elsewhere in the big leagues, they will need the 28-year-old third baseman to waive that clause first.

At the moment, it appears that Bichette is unsure whether he’s open to such an idea, according to Mike Puma of The Post, who shared that the two-time All-Star’s stance (h/t baseball insider Jon Heyman).

Entering Tuesday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers, Bichette carried just a .256/.304/.375 batting line along with 10 home runs and 51 RBIs. His .679 OPS and 88 OPS+ simply do not justify the massive contract he signed with the Mets after spending his first seven seasons in the big leagues with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Moreover, Bichette’s contract has an opt-out option for 2027 and 2028. He can exercise that, but there is no urgency for him to decide on those.

This subject would not have been as complicated if the Mets were having a much better season.

Through Tuesday, they are just 43-59, the worst in the National League East Division.
