Veteran starting pitcher Julio Teheran, who is currently participating in the 2026 World Baseball Classic with Team Colombia, announced that he is retiring from baseball on Monday, via UnderdogMLB. Teheran's announcement comes as Colombia continues to play in the WBC. The veteran pitcher is looking to make an impact with the ball club, as this is his final chapter as a baseball player.

Teheran had a strong career at the big league level. He technically made his MLB debut in 2011, but Teheran's official rookie season was in 2013 with the Atlanta Braves. The right-handed starting pitcher finished fifth in National League Rookie of the Year voting. He ended up pitching in Atlanta through the 2019 season.

Teheran would go on to spend time with the Los Angeles Angels, Detroit Tigers, Milwaukee Brewers and New York Mets. He last appeared in an MLB game with the Mets in 2024. At 35 years old, Teheran is now ready to walk away from the game.

Overall, Teheran finishes his MLB career with a 3.85 ERA in 255 total appearances (248 starts). He struck out 1,260 hitters in more than 1,740 innings of work. Teheran added five complete games, three shutouts and 81 total wins on the mound. He had a strong overall career at the big league level.

Julio Teheran's All-Star Seasons With Braves

There was a time when Teheran was considered to be one of the better pitchers in all of MLB. He earned All-Star selections in both the 2014 and 2016 seasons. Teheran was especially impressive in 2014, as he pitched to a 2.89 ERA across 33 starts and 221 innings on the mound. He added 186 strikeouts.

In 2016, Teheran recorded a 3.21 ERA and 167 strikeouts. He was quite durable during his prime, making at least 30 starts in each season from 2013-2019. Teheran also pitched in at least 174 innings in each of those years.

In all reality, Teheran was one of the more underrated starting pitchers in the 2010's decade. He consistently started games and often turned in an ERA in the 3's. While he was never the same pitcher after leaving Atlanta following the 2019 campaign, Teheran was one of the better Braves starters of the last decade.

Julio Teheran may not end up earning a Hall of Fame induction, but he was reliable for many years in the big leagues with the Braves.
