Braves make several roster moves, add new catcher

Ahead of their series finale with the Blue Jays, the Braves made several roster moves.

Catcher Austin Wynns has been selected to the major-league roster. In a corresponding move, Chadwick Tromp has been designated for assignment. The Braves also selected the contract of DaShawn Keirsey Jr., optioning him to Gwinnett. To make room on the 40-man roster, Sean Murphy has been transferred to the 60-day IL.

The Braves catching situation has been a disaster following the injuries to Drake Baldwin and Sean Murphy, but that’s to be expected when talking about third and fourth options, especially at a position that’s already so thin around the league. Tromp had hit just .200 with a .432 OPS in 12 games.

Wynns has actually somehow been worse offensively so far this season, hitting just .077 in 14 games with the Athletics. However, he has a lot more major-league experience than Tromp and actually performed quite well with the stick last year, recording an .865 OPS over 40 games.

The decision to transfer Sean Murphy to the 60-day IL shouldn’t alarm anyone. He’s already missed close to a month and is still in a splint after fracturing his middle finger. The Braves are hoping to get him back at some point after the All-Star break.
