Tyler Matzek‘s tenure with the Braves was unfortunately cut short due to injuries, but his three-year run from 2020-2022 will be remembered around Atlanta forever, helping the club to its first World Series title since 1995 with several dominating playoff performances.
Unfortunately, the final weeks of the 2022 campaign were the beginning of the end for Matzek with the Braves. Elbow discomfort kept him off the team’s NLDS roster as Atlanta aimed to repeat as champions, and a few days later, it was announced he would undergo Tommy John surgery, forcing him to miss the entire 2023 campaign.
Tyler Matzek did return in 2024, but he was a shell of himself, recording a 7.71 ERA in 11 appearances for the Braves before the team traded him to the Giants at the trade deadline in the deal that netted Jorge Soler and Luke Jackson. He never made a major-league appearance for San Francisco and wound up signing a minor-league deal with the Yankees late in the offseason. On April 22nd, he joined the major-league club, making seven appearances and recording a respectable 4.26 ERA and even better 3.26 FIP.

Prior to tonight’s game, the Yankees made the following roster moves:
•Returned RHP Jonathan Loáisiga (#43) from his rehab assignment and reinstated him from the 15-day injured list.
•Designated LHP Tyler Matzek for assignment.Additionally, the Yankees returned RHP Clayton…

The Braves bullpen could undoubtedly use another high-powered arm or two, but I’m not sure Tyler Matzek fits that billing anymore, even if his fastball is up a hair from what it’s been over the last couple of seasons. Still, I wouldn’t count anything out. Alex Anthopoulos clearly has an infatuation for players that were apart of that 2021 World Series squad. If he was willing to bring Eddie Rosario back earlier in the season, Matzek could certainly be on his radar as well.
