Braves sign two-time All-Star right-hander Charlie Morton to one-year, $20 million extension

The Atlanta Braves signed Charlie Morton to a one-year, $20 million extension with a $20 million club option for 2023 that does not include a buyout, the team announced Monday.

Morton signed a one-year, $15 million deal to return to the Braves for the 2021 season after making his Major League Baseball debut with the franchise in 2008.

The 37-year-old has been Atlanta's best pitcher this season, going 13-5 with a 3.47 ERA, 1.063 WHIP and 185 strikeouts in 158 innings. He leads Braves starters in wins, ERA and strikeouts.

Morton has also played for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Tampa Bay Rays, Houston Astros and Philadelphia Phillies. The two-time All-Star is 106-94 with a 4.02 ERA in 14 major league seasons. He won the 2017 World Series with the Astros.

Atlanta is 72-64 this season, first in the National League East with a two-game lead over the second-place Philadelphia Phillies at the start of Monday. The club has been impressive this season despite the loss of superstar outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr., who tore his ACL in July.
