The Milwaukee Brewers (89–55) will likely capture their fourth division title in five seasons as they enter the final stretch of the year with a comfortable 7.5-game lead in the NL Central over the Chicago Cubs.
A huge reason for the team’s emergence has been the ability to build a complete roster and manager Pat Murphy plugging in the most capable lineup for every matchup.
It also helps with multiple players having breakout seasons, including Andrew Vaughn, who Milwaukee acquired from the Chicago White Sox in June—an under-the-radar move at the time that has proven to be extremely significant.
Over 50 games this year with the Brewers, the 27-year-old former top prospect has finally lived up to expectations (small sample size but still), posting a .308 batting average, .371 on-base percentage, .876 OPS and nine home runs.
Vaughn has been given an opportunity after the Brewers’ primary first baseman of the past two seasons, Rhys Hoskins, suffered a sprained left thumb that has had him sidelined since early July.
However, after completing his rehab assignment, Hoskins has rejoined the major-league team for their upcoming series against the Texas Rangers and has a locker with the team in the visiting clubhouse, with his activation expected on Tuesday.
“Rhys Hoskins has a locker in the Brewers’ clubhouse in Arlington. Not anticipating the Brewers making a roster move for Hoskins today, but tomorrow is a good bet,” wrote MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy.

With Hoskins set to return to the Brewers lineup, Murphy has been presented with what may be his most difficult decision yet. Both Vaughn and Hoskins have primarily played first base and both are more than serviceable options, deserving of playing time.
Unfortunately, left-handed slugger Christian Yelich has primarily operated out of the designated hitter role, making that option to include both in the lineup every day unlikely.
Both Hoskins and Vaughn have appeared in the outfield throughout their careers, but that does not seem like a likely option with the Brewers typically preferring to have highly capable young defensive outfielders such as Sal Frelick (Gold Glove Award winner) and Jackson Chourio.
With October approaching and the Brewers’ goal being a World Series title, Murphy will have a tough decision regarding the usage of his right-handed first basemen with Hoskins’ return coming soon.
