In Game 3 of the 2024 NL Wild Card series, Brewers outfielder Sal Frelick stepped in the box against Jose Butto and crushed a 408 foot home run to put Milwaukee up 2-0. It was an electrifying moment as Frelick was the second end of back-to-back homers with Jake Bauers.
While that game did not end the way the Brewers wanted, Frelick put himself into Brewers postseason lore with that home run. Frankly his entire play in that series, putting up a 1.091 OPS in those three games and coming back from a brutal collision with a wall at the end of the regular season puts himself even further into franchise lore.
Now, coming off that that strong finish, Sal Frelick has shown up to 2025 spring training seemingly in the best shape of his life.
As position players have now all reported to Brewers spring training, Sal Frelick has bulked up over the course of the offseason, telling MLB.com's Adam McCalvy that he's put on 25 pounds of muscle since the end of last season.
A steady diet of protein, steak, chicken, rice, and mom's Italian cooking helped Frelick show up to camp around 190 pounds, which is where he's hoping to stay all season long.
The extra strength and muscle should help Frelick endure the long 162 game season, especially with the beating he puts his body through playing a Gold Glove right field. It should also help Frelick hit more home runs like he did in Game 3 of the Wild Card. Frelick had just two long balls in the regular season last year.
While Frelick is likely never going to be a big home run hitter, a little added pop and strength should help a few more hits fall for the 24 year old. He hit .259 last year with just a .655 OPS.
Muscle strength and weight doesn't necessarily guarantee success, but it shouldn't hurt for Frelick who enters the season feeling strong and is likely in the best shape of his life.
