Brewers Raise Eyebrows With Christian Yelich Announcement

The Milwaukee Brewers closed in on the end of the regular season with a 6-5 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Friday, powered in part by three RBIs from Jackson Chourio.

Before Saturday’s rematch, the club posted its lineup, and the most notable change involved veteran outfielder Christian Yelich sitting out while Gary Sanchez started behind the plate.

Saturday’s pitching matchup pits Robert Gasser against Trevor Rogers, with first pitch set for 3:05 p.m. Central (4:05 p.m. Eastern). Milwaukee has won eight of its last ten games; Baltimore is 6-4 over the same stretch.

In the announced batting order, Chourio leads off in left field, Garrett Mitchell starts in center, and William Contreras slides to designated hitter. Andrew Vaughn is at first, Joey Ortiz at third, Sanchez catching, Cooper Pratt at shortstop, Luis Lara in right, and David Hamilton at second. Gasser takes the mound.

The arrangement makes room for Sanchez by moving Contreras out of the catcher’s spot and leaving Yelich on the bench.

Yelich, 34, is in his fourteenth major-league season and his ninth with the Brewers.

He has been selected to multiple All-Star teams and won National League MVP honors in 2018. In 2026 he has collected 101 hits, 57 RBIs, 11 stolen bases, and 11 home runs across 112 games.

Sanchez, 33, has posted 44 hits, 35 RBIs, and 11 home runs in 83 games.

The numbers show two different kinds of production, but the lineup choice itself is the story of the day.

Manager Pat Murphy recently described Yelich’s work habits in a clip that circulated on social media.

Murphy recalled finding the veteran still at the park at 1 a.m. during a slump, noting that a player with Yelich’s résumé—MVP, repeated All-Star appearances, more than a decade in the league—does not have to keep that kind of schedule. “You have no idea how much this guy cares,” Murphy said.

Whether Yelich is in the lineup or resting to stay healthy for October, that reputation is part of why Milwaukee values him.

For one afternoon against the Orioles, the club is simply giving Sanchez a start and Yelich a day off.
