During Sunday’s outing against the Athletics, deGrom was cruising but was unexpectedly removed from the game after just five innings and 79 pitches. Due to his elite performance, fans began to speculate about the reasoning behind deGrom’s early exit.

Manager Bruce Bochy spoke postgame and explained deGrom’s early exit, “Probably could have gone further but that was far enough. I think overall if you look at his pitches and everything it shows that he feels good and he’s healthy.”
