The Texas Rangers have been decimated by injuries in the month of August, both to the batting order and the starting rotation, losing Marcus Semien, Nathan Eovaldi, and Corey Seager.
However, the Rangers have surprisingly surged, and after a weekend sweep of the Athletics, the team has now won five straight and eight of their last ten—thanks largely in part to Jacob deGrom.
The 37-year-old right-handed ace has returned to Cy Young-level form, posting a 2.69 ERA, 11–6 record, 0.92 WHIP, and 161 strikeouts in 150.1 innings of work. DeGrom has already established himself as one of the best pitchers of his generation, and his presence in the clubhouse along with his performance has helped the group thrive despite the wave of injuries.
During Sunday’s outing against the Athletics, deGrom was cruising but was unexpectedly removed from the game after just five innings and 79 pitches. Due to his elite performance, fans began to speculate about the reasoning behind deGrom’s early exit.
Manager Bruce Bochy spoke postgame and explained deGrom’s early exit, “Probably could have gone further but that was far enough. I think overall if you look at his pitches and everything it shows that he feels good and he’s healthy.”

DeGrom’s continued availability will be crucial down the stretch, as he would line up as the Rangers’ ace in a potential postseason series. So it is relieving for them to hear there is no injury concern with deGrom.
The right-hander has nothing left to prove, as his accolades are extremely impressive.
Across his twelve-year career, deGrom has collected the NL Rookie of the Year Award, two Cy Youngs, an ERA title, and five All-Star selections. He previously played for the New York Mets, where he established himself as the league’s top arm before injuries derailed the latter half of his career.
With the Rangers’ recent surge powered by deGrom, they now find themselves within striking distance in the American League wild card chase—leapfrogging the Kansas City Royals and sitting 2.5 games behind the Seattle Mariners.
