Cardinals second baseman JJ Wetherholt was activated from the injured list and inserted into the lineup against the Giants for Wednesday's series finale.

St. Louis also designated right-hander Peter Strzelecki and infielder Ramon Urias for assignment.

Wetherholt, 24, went on the IL on Aug. 30 after going 0-for-8 in a two-game stretch against the Pirates. The rookie was fighting wrist discomfort for more than a month prior to the move.

Signed to an eight-year, $112.5 million contract extension in July, Wetherholt is batting .242 with 17 home runs and 48 RBIs in 130 games this season with the Cardinals. He was selected by St. Louis with the seventh overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft.

The left-handed-hitting Wetherholt starred at West Virginia during his college career. Last season, he was MVP of the Double-A Texas League despite playing in just 62 games for Springfield.
