New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said that pitcher Clay Holmes is feeling much better after dealing with an injury scare during the Mets' loss to the Athletics on Friday. Holmes was removed from the game during the sixth inning after dealing with a left hamstring tightness.

Holmes was examined by Mendoza and a team trainer after feeling a bit of tightness in his left leg following a play that saw Holmes come off the mound to deliver a ground out. After the visit to the mound, Holmes was then pulled out of the game as a precaution to avoid any serious damage.

Mendoza made sure to let everyone know after the game that Holmes was doing okay and didn't need to go through any imaging. Mendoza will watch as Holmes throws a bullpen and believes that if he is feeling good enough, he should be able to suit up for his next start sometime next week.

Prior to the injury, Holmes played 5.1 innings against the Athletics, striking out 3 batters while only allowing one run. Before Fridy's game, Holmes had a .150 ERA in his first two starts, the best out of any Mets pitcher.

During his first two starts, Holmes threw a total of 12.2 innings. In that duration, Holmes excelled with nine strikeouts and only allowing two runs, both of them happening during the Mets' win against the St. Louis Cardinals on March 30.

Holmes' consistent role as a starting pitcher began as soon as he made the move to the Mets in 2025 after spending four years with the New York Yankees. Holmes had made 307 relief appearances with the Yankees before finding his way into a starting role with the Mets.

In his first year as a Met, Holmes played 33 games, with 31 of them coming as a starter. He recorded a 3.53 ERA and struck out 129 batters, the most strikeouts in one season in his career.

Despite Holmes' success on the mound, it wasn't enough to help the Mets make it to the playoffs as the team suffered one of the biggest midseason downfalls in recent memory. With Holmes' recent performances surpassing all the other Mets pitchers, the team will look to correct the wrong from last season and fight their way towards a playoff position.

The Mets currently sit in third place in the NL East. The team is one game behind the Miami Marlins and two games behind the division-leading Atlanta Braves.
