Carson Spiers Looks To Prove His First Start Wasn't a Fluke

The Cincinnati Reds and Sundays do not mix for some reason. Last year, the Reds were 9-18 on the Lord's Day. It's possible there was a lot of correlation vs. causation there as those were often the days Tyler Stephenson had off. However, this year, Stephenson is still out and the team dropped the first Sunday game to the San Francisco Giants.

In his first start of the year, Carson Spiers matched up against the Texas Rangers and had a gem wasted. In what should have been the first win of his season, it was the beginning of the Reds' three straight 1-0 loss stretch. Despite that, Spiers was on. He tossed 6.0 innings and allowed just one run off three hits while allowing two walks and striking out five.

This is Spiers' second start against the Milwaukee Brewers and fourth appearance overall. Last year, Spiers was roughed up to the tune of eight runs off seven hits and four walks in just 5.0 innings.

The lineup behind him looks to repeat Saturday's impressive 14-hit, 11-run performance unlike the four-hit shutout last week:

1) CF TJ Friedl
2) 2B Santiago Espinal
3) SS Elly De La Cruz
4) LF Gavin Lux
5) 3B Jeimer Candelario
6) 1B Christian Encarnacion-Strand
7) DH Spencer Steer
8) RF Jake Fraley
9) C Austin Wynns
SP) Carson Spiers

The Brewers will counter with Chad Patrick. This will be Patrick's second start on the year (and in his MLB career) and third appearance overall. In that start, he threw 4.2 innings of scoreless baseball while allowing three hits and three walks with five strikeouts.

Last year in AAA, Patrick made 24 starts, finished with a 14-1 record and a 2.90 ERA and 1.086 WHIP.

The Brewers lineup also went for double-digit hits last night and will be looking for the club's 11th straight series win over the Reds:

1) 2B Brice Turang
2) LF Jackson Churio
3) DH Cristian Yelich
4) CF Garrett Mitchell
5) RF Sal Frelick
6) 1B Jake Baurs
7) SS Joey Ortiz
8) 3B Oliver Dunn
9) C Eric Haase
