The Chicago Cubs snapped their 10-game losing streak on Wednesday by defeating the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-4. It was a major relief to the players and fans, who had become beyond frustrated with the performance on the field. Of course, winning the first game after a losing streak is just the initial step. Winning the second game is a bigger indicator that things are turning around.
Fortunately, Chicago did win their second consecutive game. On Thursday, Colin Rea, of all people, out-dueled Paul Skenes as the Cubs defeated the Pirates again, this time by the score of 7-2.
Rea and Skenes both pitched 5.1 innings yesterday. Rea allowed four hits, three walks, and two runs (all earned) while striking out five. Skenes, on the other hand, allowed four hits, three walks, and three runs (just one earned) while striking out 10.
After the game, Rea had the following to say about Chicago’s second-straight victory:
“We needed this. After you win one game, you want to win another. You always have to take it one day at a time in this game, but when you go through the stretch we did, you can’t help but wonder what the next couple of weeks will look like.
“We still have to take it one day at a time, but you’d like to think we can string some more wins together.”
As one can see, neither Rea nor the Cubs believe they have truly turned the page yet. In order for them to truly put the negativity of their 10-game losing streak behind them, they need to start stringing together wins.
And they don’t need to come in bunches. If the Cubs can win series after series, they will be in good shape.
