MLB Game Recap

Chicago narrowly defeated the Padres 5-4 on Wednesday. They secured the series win behind a dominant start from Jameson Taillon. Taillon carried a perfect game into the fifth inning. Taillon’s final line included 7.0 IP, 3 ER, 3 H, 6 K, and 95 pitches. Two home runs in the fifth inning briefly tied the game. The bullpen usage was high-leverage. Ben Brown induced a critical double play in the eighth. Hoby Milner earned his first save. Key turning points included a home run by Pete Crow-Armstrong. A late solo blast from Matt Shaw added the insurance run the Cubs needed to secure the series win.

Standout Performer

Matt Shaw delivered a complete performance, finishing 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, a walk, and two runs scored. Shaw’s solo home run in the eighth inning provided the essential insurance run needed to preserve the narrow victory. This multi-hit effort raised his season average to .301 and solidified his impact as a versatile threat in the Cubs’ lineup.

Key News & Notes

The injury bug continues to impact the pitching staff, and unfortunately, it is starting to take a toll. To begin with, starter Justin Steele has been shut down due to a flexor strain. As a result, he will not return to the mound before the All-Star break. This situation is a significant setback for the rotation.

In addition, rookie reliever Riley Martin has also been diagnosed with a flexor strain. Consequently, he is expected to be sidelined for approximately eight weeks, further thinning the bullpen depth.

Meanwhile, there is at least some positive news. Shortstop Dansby Swanson sat out Wednesday’s finale because of a left glute cramp. He is expected to return for the next series.
