The Chicago Cubs, a month ago, were in the midst of what would become their second ten-game winning streak of the season. They were atop the National League Central Division and looked like one of the best teams in Major League Baseball. But the bottom has fallen out quickly.
When they won their tenth straight game on May 8, the Cubs improved to 27-12. Now, following their 5-4 loss to the Athletics on Wednesday night, they are 32-30, having gone 5-18 over the last few weeks. That is the worst record in the Majors over that time frame.
Indeed, there is a great deal going wrong in Chicago, but do not expect manager Craig Counsell to make any significant changes.
At one point on Wednesday night, Chicago was winning 4-2. However, they ended up collapsing in the eighth inning and gave up the go-ahead run in the tenth without being able to answer in the bottom half of the inning.
For weeks, fans have been calling on Counsell to do something, anything, to spark the team. Based on what he told reporters after the game, though, no such changes are coming.
“It’s one of the challenging things about our game,” Counsell said according to The Athletic. “Sometimes, you do have to wait for things to happen. As much as you want to put your finger on it and say, ‘Change it,’ the game makes you wait. It makes you sit in discomfort for a little while.”
Obviously, Counsell is not panicking. While his team has amassed the worst record in baseball over the last month (approximately), he is content being uncomfortable while his players try to fight their way out of their slumps.
Meanwhile, his former team, the Milwaukee Brewers, are 17-6 in the same span and have taken over first place in the NL Central… again.
