The Chicago Cubs got some good injury news Tuesday when they announced that Jameson Taillon would be rejoining the major league club after missing a month and a half with a calf injury. Taillon was scheduled to rejoin the team on Monday, but a rainout of the second game of Monday’s doubleheader delayed Taillon’s return. Taillon’s return comes at a crucial time for the Chicago Cubs as they take on the division-leading Milwaukee Brewers.
Taillon came back with a flare and delivered six innings of one-run baseball to help the Chicago Cubs win the third game of their five-game series with the Milwaukee Brewers. Taillon rejoins a starting rotation that has the best ERA in all of MLB since the All-Star break. To make room for Taillon on the roster, the front office decided to demote Luke Little. The Chicago Cubs are hoping that Taillon can continue to win ball games a nd either overtake the Brewers in the division or get the Cubs to the postseason and be a reliable starter come October.
Taillon had been out since June 29 with a calf injury until Tuesday night when he rejoined the Chicago Cubs starting rotation. Taillon was thrown back into the fire after a month and a half absence to pitch against the NL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers. The veteran right-hander didn’t skip a beat in his return, continuing a solid 2025 campaign with a six-inning, one-run outing to help the Chicago Cubs win 4-1.
Taillon’s return makes the Chicago Cubs rotation as a whole, as it’s going to be for the rest of the season. Justin Steele is out for the season with an elbow injury. Aside from Steele, the starting rotation is at full strength. Taillon is adding to the best rotation in baseball since the All-Star break. The Chicago Cubs’ rotation has a sparkling 3.10 ERA since the midsummer classic, and the addition of Taillon should only improve that unit. Along with Taillon, the Cubs will tout Shota Imanaga, Matthew Boyd, Cade Horton , and Colin Rea, if healthy, for the rest of the season.
This rotation is the best hope for the Chicago Cubs to stop the bleeding in the NL Central. They have won two of the first three games against the Milwaukee Brewers, due in no small part to the efforts of the starting rotation. After Michael Soroka got injured in his first start and Javier Assad struggled in his first two starts of the year, this current group is going to be the ideal rotation moving forward for the Chicago Cubs to succeed. Soroka is on the IL, and Assad has been demoted. To make room for Taillon on the active roster, the Cubs have sent Little to AAA Iowa.
