Veteran catcher Carson Kelly, who spent the last two seasons with the Chicago Cubs, posted an emotional message to the team, city, and fans on Instagram Friday. Kelly, 32, had a $7.5 million option in 2027, which was declined. He is now a free agent.

Thank you to the fans and the city of Chicago for embracing me and my family. You made this place feel like home, and we’ll always cherish our time here.

Excited to get back to work and as for what’s next only time will tell…

The message makes it feel like he’s moving on next year and could be seeking another multi-year deal. With the Cubs, he hit .254/.335/.402 with 27 homers, a .736 OPS in 231 games, and was a solid presence behind the plate. He won 69% of challenges in 2026 and posted a career-best 4 DRS (defensive runs saved) in 2025.

Are the Cubs preparing for life after Carson Kelly?

The door to bring Kelly back isn’t necessarily closed. However, it seems less likely. It could depend on what other offers he’s presented with, but he’ll look at what’s out there first. Obviously, the looming lockout impacts things too. Regardless, it’s hard to imagine putting out a message like that without eyeing a new chapter.

It also depends on what the Cubs want to do. Kelly was a very solid player in his two years as a Cub, though he’s not necessarily irreplaceable. Ideally, the Cubs, whether it’s Kelly or not, have a veteran backstop next season. Right now, the main options behind the dish are Miguel Amaya and prospect Owen Ayers. Amaya doesn’t feel like a primary long-term solution at this point, and Ayers has no MLB experience.

Hats off to Kelly for his time in Chicago. He seemed like a great teammate, especially for his pitchers, and he came up with some big hits. Unless there’s a surprise, the Cubs will likely have a hole to fill behind the plate.
