The Cincinnati Reds hosted a red-hot Milwaukee Brewers team and came up short. Milwaukee prevailed 10-8 to win its 13th consecutive game. This was an offensive showdown with neither team able to hold the opposition down for very long.

Cincinnati had six players finish with an RBI in tonight’s win. Shortstop Elly De La Cruz and Second Baseman Gavin Lux each had 2 RBI this evening. Unfortunately, Cincinnati surrendered 9 unanswered runs to lose the game in heartbreaking fashion. Brewers Designated Hitter Christian Yelich finished with two home runs and 5 RBI. First Baseman Andrew Vaughn added 3 RBI of his own in the comeback victory. Can the Cincinnati Reds get it going against the Brewers over the weekend?

Cincinnati Reds Gaining Ground In Playoff Race

The strong play of the Cincinnati, coupled with a miserable stretch by the New York Mets, had the Reds 0.5 GB of the final wild card spot entering the day. De La Cruz has been the ballclub’s best offensive player. Even though Cincinnati is in a good playoff position on paper, they only have a 19.2% chance of qualifying for the postseason according to FanGraphs.

Regardless of the result of New York’s game tonight, they will remain in playoff position come Saturday. Cincinnati has had a surprisingly strong season, but must maintain it. Terry Francona did not return to the dugout to watch the MLB Playoffs at home.

Final Thoughts

The Reds will take on the Brewers for the middle game of their three-game set tomorrow evening. Milwaukee is looking to keep up its high level of play, while Cincinnati is looking to keep pace in the playoff race. This is an important series for both ballclubs.
