Comparing Phillies Pitching Prospects Debuts

With Andrew Painter making his MLB debut on March 31 comparing Philadelphia Phillies pitching prospect debuts is interesting. Painter was in line to be in the rotation at the start of the 2023 season. However Painter injured his elbow which led to him undergoing Tommy John surgery. It was anticipated at points last season that Painter would make his debut in 2025. Painter obviously did not end up making his MLB debut last year. Instead Mick Abel made his major league debut last season with the Phillies. Abel was later traded to the Minnesota Twins for Jhoan Duran. Painter and Abel are the two most recent Phillies pitchers drafted by the franchise in the first round to debut for the club.

Comparing Phillies Pitching Debuts

Andrew Painter – 3/31/2026

Painter got the win pitching 5 1/3 innings against the Washington Nationals. To add Painter gave up one run on four hits while recording eight strikeouts. Unlike the other pitchers on this list Painter made the Phillies Opening Day roster in the season of his MLB debut. Furthermore Painter has a 1.69 ERA and a 0.94 WHIP with an 8.00 K/BB rate on the season through one start. Painter has shown improvements compared to his rough 2025 minor league season. In this outing Painter threw his slider and sinker about twice as often as he did in Triple-A last season. Painter threw his fastball and changeup less often while throwing his curveball slightly more often in his MLB debut.

Mick Abel – 5/18/2025

Abel made his MLB debut with the Phillies out of necessity. Aaron Nola went on the injured list which led to Abel getting called up. Abel got a win against the Pittsburgh Pirates going six innings allowing no runs on five hits with nine strikeouts. The nine strikeouts matched a Phillies record for a debuting pitcher. Abel was sent back down to the minor leagues after this spot start. However Abel would return to the majors a few weeks later. Abel had a 2-2 record with a 5.04 ERA with a 1.36 WHIP in six major league starts with the Phillies before being traded to the Twins. The outing against the Pirates was the lone major league outing in a Phillies uniform where Abel allowed no runs and struck out at least five batters last season.

Aaron Nola – 7/21/2015

Nola made his MLB debut one year after being drafted in the first round by the Phillies. Gage Wood became the first college pitcher the Phillies have drafted in the first round since Nola last season. Wood could mirror the path Nola took and arrive in the big leagues at some point this season. Nola lost his debut against the Tampa Bay Rays pitching six innings while allowing one run on five hits while recording six strikeouts and one walk. This is the sole debut included on this list where the Phillies lost the game. Nola finished the 2015 season with a 6-2 record and a 3.59 ERA along with a 1.20 WHIP in 13 starts. Since then Nola has been one of the most reliable Phillies pitchers.

Cole Hamels – 5/12/2006

Hamels received a no decision against the Cincinnati Reds in his MLB debut. Painter and Hamels have been compared often heading into the 2026 season. Hamels went five innings allowing no runs on one hit while striking out seven and issuing five walks. While Hamels did not allow any runs like Abel and Nola he did not pitch the most effectively in his debut. Hamels finished with a 9-8 record along with a 4.08 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP in 23 starts in 2006. While Hamels started off slow he would go on to become a key part of the Phillies 2008 World Series championship team. Hamels won World Series MVP that year. If Painter can become close to the pitcher Hamels was for the Phillies things will have worked out.
