The Chicago Cubs received an encouraging update on injured reliever Daniel Palencia as manager Craig Counsell outlined the next steps in the closer's recovery before Sunday's game. The hard-throwing right-hander remains on the injured list but continues progressing toward a return.
Palencia threw a successful bullpen session Saturday, giving the Cubs another positive sign as they look to strengthen a bullpen that has operated without one of its late-inning arms since mid-June.
Chicago entered Sunday with a 59-45 record, sitting second in the National League Central, six games behind the Milwaukee Brewers while remaining firmly in the postseason race.
Daniel Palencia (flexor strain) had a great bullpen Saturday, Counsell said, and will progress to an up-down bullpen Tuesday then a live BP.

It puts Palencia on track to begin a rehab assignment the week of Aug. 3.
According to Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune, Counsell said Palencia's next step will be an "up-down" bullpen session Tuesday, followed by a live batting practice session. If those go as planned, the Cubs expect him to begin a minor league rehab assignment during the week of Aug. 3.
Palencia has been sidelined since June 16 after being diagnosed with a mild right forearm flexor strain following right elbow inflammation. He also missed time earlier this season with a left oblique injury, making the organization's cautious approach understandable.
Before landing on the injured list, Palencia appeared in 19 games and posted a 2-1 record with a 2.70 ERA, 19 strikeouts across 16.2 innings and converted all three of his save opportunities. His triple-digit fastball earned him an important role at the back end of Chicago's bullpen before the injury interrupted his season.
The Cubs have relied on several relievers to cover late innings during Palencia's absence, but his return would provide another high-leverage option for Counsell as Chicago chases a playoff berth.
With the trade deadline approaching, Palencia's steady recovery could also influence the Cubs' plans. If the 26-year-old returns as expected in August, Chicago may be able to prioritize starting pitching or bullpen depth rather than searching for a full-time closer.
