The Chicago Cubs are absolutely savoring their incredible 7-6 victory over the Athletics at Wrigley Field. It was CF Pete-Crow Armstrong, whose walk-off inside-the-park home run sealed the deal.
Afterward, Cubs manager Craig Counsell made a bold prediction about what lies ahead, per MLB.com. He says they anticipate the same thing to happen in October during the playoffs.
“Hopefully we tell that story in October,” Counsell said.
After a strong start to the season, followed by a period of struggle, winning a game in this capacity is a welcome sign for Chicago. They started at 27-12 and went on a ten-game winning streak. Since then, the struggles were attributed to failure to score runs with runners on base, as well as injuries to their starting rotation.
Currently, they are 33-30 and are in 4th place in the National League Central Division. They are 5.5 games behind the first-place Milwaukee Brewers and have lost six out of their last ten.
It’s still way too early to determine what will happen come October. Last year, the Cubs finished at 92-70, second to the Brewers in the NL Central, but secured a wild-card birth. In the process, they made it to their first postseason since 2020. Ultimately, the Cubs would defeat the San Diego Padres in the Wild Card series before succumbing to the Brewers in the NLDS.
Going into the season, the expectation was for Chicago to make a deep postseason run and win the NL Central.
The Cubs now begin a three-game home series on Friday against the San Francisco Giants.
