Cubs Acquire Catcher Matt Thaiss from Angels

Thaiss has largely served as a depth catcher in his time with the Angels. The 29-year-old has caught more than 60 games just once in his six seasons with the Halos. Although his career .208/.313/.342 slash line doesn't turn heads, acquiring depth behind the dish is never a bad move, especially if you're the Cubs. 

Last season, four different catchers suited up for the Cubs. The season started with Miguel Amaya and Yan Gomes. Then, Gomes was let go and in came Tomas Nido. However, an injury ended Nido's tenure as a Cub and Christian Bethancourt took the team by storm late in the season. Entering 2025, catching depth is welcomed. 

In 2024, Thaiss slashed .204/.323/.299 with two home runs and 16 RBIs. Despite the underwhelming numbers, Thaiss' production would still be better than most catchers that suited up for the Cubs in 2024. He'll likely serve more as a third catcher, assuming Jed Hoyer brings in another catcher, but will be beneficial depth if injuries occur. 

To free up a spot on the 40-man roster for Thaiss, right-handed pitcher Trey Wingenter was designated for assignment.
