Cubs Add Veteran Pitcher After Rash of Pitching Injuries

After losing two more starting pitchers to the injured list on Wednesday, the Chicago Cubs were quick to add a veteran starter off waivers from an NL rival.

The state of the Cubs' rotation is nearing levels of desperation. On Wednesday, the Cubs added Ben Brown (neck strain) and Edward Cabrera (hamstring strain) to the injured list, joining the already injured Matthew Boyd, Justin Steele, Jameson Taillon, and Cade Horton. This leaves just Shota Imanaga, Colin Rea, and Javier Assad as the only remaining starters, although manager Craig Counsell announced that Boyd will be activated from the IL on Thursday to start against the New York Mets.

After losing both Brown and Cabrera, the Cubs turned to the waiver wire to add veteran starter Bryse Wilson from the Philadelphia Phillies. Wilson, 28, was designated for assignment on Monday after making just one start with the big-league team. After signing a minor league deal with the Phillies in the offseason, Wilson has spent most of the year at Triple-A Lehigh Valley as a starter.

Despite playing for five MLB teams over nine seasons, Wilson has struggled so far this year with the IronPigs. In 12 appearances, 11 of which were starts, Wilson has a 3-5 record with a bloated 6.29 ERA and 1.564 WHIP. He made one two-inning relief appearance for the Phillies before being DFA'd.

Wilson should immediately slot in as a healthy arm for the Cubs. He is also out of options, so he will take a spot on the 40-man roster when he joins Chicago. Wilson spent the first four seasons of his career with the Atlanta Braves before making stops with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Milwaukee Brewers, and Chicago White Sox. In 164 career appearances, Wilson has a 4.80 ERA and 1.406 WHIP at the MLB level.

In a corresponding move, the Cubs designated right-handed reliever Christian Roa for assignment.
