Cubs beat up on Phillies once again, clinch season series and 7th straight win

The Chicago Cubs are in the middle of a seven-game winning streak, their longest since the 2023 season when they rattled off eight straight. This run has included multiple series against the Philadelphia Phillies, who have been struggling of late, as well as a sweep of the reeling New York Mets, who’ve dropped 12 in a row. Still, taking care of business against slumping opponents doesn’t diminish just how well the Cubs are playing right now and could have implications at seasons end.

After a 7–4 win on April 21, the Cubs officially locked up the season series against the Phillies. Chicago had already taken two of three in Philadelphia and has now added two more wins at Wrigley Field with a pair of games still remaining. No matter how the rest of the series plays out, the Cubs will finish with the better head-to-head record.

Across the first five matchups, the Cubs have outscored the Phillies by 17 runs. They’ve already posted offensive outbursts of 10 and 11 runs earlier in the season series, and have followed that up with games of seven and five runs in the current set. More importantly, Chicago now owns the head-to-head tiebreaker between the two clubs, a detail that could loom large if they finish with identical records and as that would determine playoff positioning/seeding.

With the National League Central shaping up as the toughest division in baseball, every team above .500 and no clear frontrunner, the Cubs are beginning to set the tone for what could matter most down the stretch. Stockpiling wins and locking up key tiebreakers now could pay off in a major way later. For the moment, Chicago is doing exactly what contenders should: capitalizing on opportunities and making every game count.
