The Chicago Cubs are currently in a slump, as their losing streak has hit five games. After enduring a three-game sweep at the Milwaukee Brewers, manager Craig Counsell made an admission about the team’s struggles, according to Chicago baseball beat writer Jesse Rogers.
“Craig Counsell: ‘We’re in a funk right now. It’s up to us to change that,” Rogers wrote on X.
The Cubs are 2-8 over their past 10 games after winning their first eight games in May. Significantly, errors have doomed the Cubs, leading to a fall in the standings. While the Cubs are still 29-21, there is work to do to end this slump. Throughout the slump, there have been off-field distractions for the Cubs, which may be a reason things have gotten worse.
The offense is inconsistent, ranking 14th in batting average. Yet, they are second in on-base percentage and fifth in runs. The Cubs are also ninth in home runs and slugging percentage. But the offense managed just two hits in the finale against the Brewers. In the game before, they left seven runners stranded, and that was also the case in the series opener.
Their starting pitching and bullpen have produced inconsistent outings throughout this slump. As noted before, the defense has produced five errors across five games. Pete Crow-Armstrong has made some blunders that have led to big innings for opposing teams. If the Cubs can find a way to clamp down on those mistakes, they can end the slump.
The Cubs will begin a three-game series this weekend at Wrigley Field against the Houston Astros.
