Cubs' Drew Pomeranz Breaks Silence Amid Return to MLB

The Chicago Cubs had major concerns in their bullpen, and while there is still uncertainty at the position, it's a lot better than it was early in the year. Things are better largely in part due to the addition of a veteran reliever who hadn't pitched since 2021.

Adding a reliever was a huge need for the Cubs, and their first move of many was to trade for 11-year veteran reliever Drew Pomeranz from the Seattle Mariners. The trade has been a huge boon for the Cubs, and for Pomeranz, it's been a dream come true.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today wrote an article in which Pomeranz talked about his return to the Major Leagues. In that article, Pomeranz talked about his return to the mound and what it's been like to pitch in the Major Leagues after over three years away.

"I mean, it just doesn't feel real," Pomeranz said. "I've been dreaming about this moment for years. It's tough to keep pushing through mentally, physically, all of it, especially when over and over again, nothing is working."

His perseverance in returning to MLB is remarkable. Rarely do players go three full seasons between MLB appearances. Pomeranz last pitched in 2021, before getting injured and missing all of 2022. He didn't make an MLB roster in 2023 or 2024, but in 2025, after forcing the Mariners' hand, he made his way to the Cubs.

"Now, just being healthy in the big leagues, throwing as hard as I can, and having this kind of success," Pomeranz explained. "It's really a dream come true."

Through his 12 appearances with the Cubs, his first appearances in over three years, Pomeranz has a 0.00 ERA. He's pitched 12.1 innings, allowing four hits and three walks, while striking out 14. Pomeranz has also hit three batters.

While he hasn't pitched a lot this year, just over 12 innings, Pomeranz has been a fantastic pitcher for the Cubs. The former All-Star and World Series champion has made a big impact on the Cubs coming out of the bullpen.

It's his first time pitching in the Major Leagues since 2021, and he's been making the most of it. The 36-year-old is in his 12th MLB season, and he's become an important piece for an ascending Cubs team.
