The Chicago Cubs play in one of the oldest venues in MLB. Wrigley Field, now 111 years old, has been the site of many iconic moments. But the All-Star Game hasn’t been played there in over 30 years.
However, according to an article from Patrick Mooney in The Athletic, the Cubs are aiming to land the 2027 MLB All-Star Game to take place at the iconic stadium.
"The Chicago Cubs remain focused on landing Wrigley Field as the host for Major League Baseball's 2027 All-Star Game," Mooney wrote. "Those lobbying efforts have long been part of the $1 billion Wrigleyville project that renovated the ballpark and redeveloped the neighborhood."
With so much time, effort, and money on the line, the Cubs' pursuit of the All-Star game in Chicago is making headway. But, despite some believing it's set in stone, the Cubs haven't officially landed the 2027 All-Star game.
Mooney included a statement from a Cubs spokesperson who said, "No decision has been made," regarding the bid for the All-Star game. But, Mooney writes that, "... it appears the Cubs are gaining momentum in this pursuit."
Wrigley Field hasn't hosted an All-Star game since 1990, 35 years ago. Before that, the home of the Cubs hosted the 1947 and 1962 All-Star games. Having the All-Star game at Wrigley Field would also mean major renovations would have to occur in and around the stadium.
With a $1 billion renovation project already in the works, the outcome would be a big step towards MLB awarding the Cubs and Wrigley Field the 2027 All-Star Game.
If the Cubs do land the 2027 All-Star game at Wrigley Field, it would be the oldest ballpark to ever host the All-Star game. The Boston Red Sox's Fenway Park last hosted the All-Star game in 1999, which currently is the oldest stadium to host an All-Star game.
While nothing is confirmed, the report from Mooney that the Cubs are picking up steam in landing the All-Star game is an exciting development. While there is no set date for an announcement, the host of the 2027 All-Star game is expected to be announced at some point this summer.
