It's impossible to get a feel for what the Chicago Cubs will have to give Kyle Tucker in free agency. If this were a few years ago, the left-handed hitting slugger would likely be looking at a $300 million deal.
However, after the contracts signed around Major League Baseball, most recently Vladimir Guerrero Jr. taking a $500 million deal, there could be a scenario where that’s the starting price.
Attempting to predict his next contract after the latest news from Jon Heyman, who stated that Tucker doesn't want to talk about an extension until the summer, Jackson Roberts of Sporting News predicted that his contract will have to be at least in the neighborhood of $500 million to keep him around.
“What the 'right offer' is, and whether the Cubs have any intentions of coughing it up, remains to be seen. After Vladimir Guerrero Jr. got $500 million from the Toronto Blue Jays, the Cubs will likely have to at least get in that neighborhood to keep Tucker, if not match it.
“For the time being, Cubs fans will have to try to enjoy watching a first-place team with Tucker batting in the second slot in the lineup. But the fear of Tucker's free agency will undoubtedly linger in the back of their minds,” Roberts wrote.
Over the past decade, the Cubs haven't necessarily been willing to hand out those types of deals.
It wouldn't make much sense to move the package they did for Tucker and not give him the money he wants, but there could be an outcome where that happens.
It'd be very unfortunate, something no Cubs fan wants, but it can't be counted out given what this organization has shown.
