Will Kyle Tucker's contract be $500 million? Will the Chicago Cubs have to go above that if they want to keep the three-time All-Star around?
These are all questions that will play out over the next few months.
Until then, there will be many predictions on where things could go.
In a recent one from Forbes’ Daniel Epstein, he wrote that Tucker will aim for at least the $500 million guaranteed contract that Vladimir Guerrero Jr. recently signed.
“Kyle Tucker will most likely aim for the same $500 million guarantee that Guerrero received, but a 14-year deal is out of the question since he will be turning 29. $500 million over 12 years would have an average annual value of $41.7 million, which would top Bregman’s salary. That seems like his most likely contract demand relative to recent market history, and with as well as he plays, he should be able to find a team to meet it,” he wrote.
If Tucker's contract only comes out to around $500 million, it's something that the Cubs need to get done as soon as possible.
However, there's a chance he could be looking at Juan Soto's mega deal and think he's a similar player to him.
The only issue with that is that Tucker is going to be 29 years old, while Soto was 26 during his free agency.
Still, even if he comes in a few hundred million dollars less than that, he could be looking at $600-plus million.
The one problem the Cubs will likely face is that all the top market teams in Major League Baseball, likely outside of the Los Angeles Dodgers, will be interested in him. That means they have to worry about the New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, and others, as he'll be far and away the best player on the market.
