The Chicago Cubs are attempting to swing big this Trade Deadline to chase down the Brewers for first place in the National League Central Division.

Chicago has struggled with pitching this season following injures to Cade Horton, Justin Steele, Ben Brown, Edward Cabrera and others. Their rotation has been shot for most of the year.

But now just one day following the blockbuster trade with the Blue Jays for right-handed pitcher Kevin Gausman, the Cubs pick up another starting pitcher.

The Cubs are acquiring left-handed pitcher Braxton Garrett from the Miami Marlins.

Despite struggling in a short, two game stint in the major leagues this year, Garrett has been electric in Triple-A.

In 16 games (15 starts), the 28-year-old is posting a 2.90 ERA with 83 strikeouts and 29 walks in 77 2/3 innings.

However in his major league career, he posted a solid 4.16 ERA in 330 2/3 innings across 67 games. He most notably posted a 3.66 ERA in 2023, his latest season as a full time starter.

The Cubs have been searching for a controllable pitchers and may have found him with Garrett. He is not a free agent until the 2029 season. They could attempt to bring him back to form for the back-end of the starting rotation.

In exchange, infielder Jonathon Long and right-handed pitcher Jace Beck are sent to Miami.
