The Chicago Cubs have reshaped their roster a tad ahead of their crosstown rivalry series against the Chicago White Sox.
According to Meghan Montemurro, Shortstop Dansby Swanson was placed on the injured list with a left oblique strain, while right-hander Edward Cabrera landed on the IL because of a blister. Losing two important players is far from ideal as the Cubs prepare to face the White Sox, but the team made several corresponding moves to reinforce its roster.
Chicago recalled right-hander Javier Assad, giving the pitching staff a fresh arm following Cabrera’s blister injury. The Cubs also called up outfielder Kevin Alcántara and infielder Owen Miller.
Infielder James Triantos was optioned as part of the roster shuffle. Additionally, reliever Daniel Palencia was transferred to the 60-day injured list, opening the necessary spot on the 40-man roster for Miller.
Swanson’s absence will be the most significant development. The veteran shortstop plays an important role on both sides of the ball, and oblique injuries can be difficult to manage. The Cubs will need their infield depth to help cover his loss until he is healthy enough to return.
Cabrera’s blister also creates another question for Chicago’s pitching staff as Cabrera just returned from another injury before his start on Sunday. Assad should have an immediate opportunity to help stabilize the situation after being recalled.
Alcántara’s promotion may be the most exciting part of the announcement for Cubs fans. He will get another opportunity to contribute at the major-league level while Chicago deals with multiple injuries.
