With the Chicago Cubs potentially turning things around, Jed Hoyer is continuing to scour the market for bargain bin finds. This time, it's a reunion with outfielder Trayce Thompson.

Tommy Birch of the Des Moines Register, reports that the Cubs signed Thompson to a minor-league deal on Wednesday. He was also in the lineup for Triple-A Iowa the same day.

With Owen Caissie battling a back injury, this move appears to be for depth. Thompson figures to see a good amount of playing time with Caissie not being 100%. If he impresses, it wouldn't be surprising if the Cubs call him up.

After debuting with the Chicago White Sox in 2015, Thompson has spent time with four other teams since his debut. This will be his second stint with the Cubs after spending time with the team in 2021.

With the selloff of the championship core in their rearview mirror, the Cubs needed depth and Thompson was one of many journeymen used. He spent 15 games with the team while also providing four home runs.

He spent time with both the Los Angeles Dodgers and White Sox during the 2023 season. Thompson was one of three players sent to the Southside at the trade deadline in the Lance Lynn trade

As Cody Bellinger's status remains unclear, it seems plausible for the Cubs to call up their newly-signed acquisition. The depth has been questionable for the team this year. Relying on a journeyman is not uncommon for this team.

The arrival of Trayce Thompson is another "low-risk" move that this front office commonly does. If he's successful then it's a win, if he falls flat in Triple-A it's not a problem either.
